Attached to its traditions, the village of St-Cergue is passionate about perpetuating the authentic celebration of the désalpe, during which locals and visitors can enjoy watching the beautifully decorated herds as they pass by, browse round the market stalls and savour typical specialities.
In Switzerland, the cattle spends the summer in the mountains and the winter on the plains. In autumn they start to bring the cattle down from the mountain pastures which is called the Désalpe, a traditional event in the Jura Vaudois, above Nyon. It is celebrated in St-Cergue every year in the fall.
The procession of many beautifully decorated herds during this event testifies to the great passion the herdsmen have for their animals. Cows and other animals of the pastures pass through the village during the morning, to the sounds of bells and the alphorn. The celebration includes a variety of typical entertainment and a market where you can purchase local and regional products.
