Gaspar Borchardt, a violin maker in Cremona, has been obsessed for years with the idea of making an exceptional violin that could rival a Stradivarius. He set out to find the most perfect wood, a multi-century-old maple that was almost impossible to find. Gaspar travels to the forests of Central Europe, to areas still covered with landmines, guided by intriguing and disturbing characters. But if he succeeds, he will be able to offer Janine Jansen, a famous Dutch violinist, the most perfect instrument of her career as a violin maker.
