The arch Ste-Marie is the last remaining medieval entrance gate of the five that closed the city of Nyon in the Middle Ages.
Formerly, two towers framed this medieval machicolated gate.
During the construction of a lakeside house in the 18th century, a tower was demolished and the gate replaced by the current stone archway.
